Objectives

The Auckland Branch recognises that New Zealand is an island nation that is deeply dependent upon maritime trade but is remote from its markets. It also has an extensive Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and a relationship with Antarctica. New Zealanders have a natural affinity with the sea, with sailing and boating activities, and with fishing and other offshore pursuits; but they also have strong values that support environmental protection, sustainable development and the rule of law.

The League therefore intends to promote, encourage and support:

  1. An understanding amongst our youth of the issues that impact on these realities and values, and to provide the opportunity for them to experience recreational maritime activities, and specifically to support the maintenance and development of the Sea Cadet units in the Auckland region.
  2. An understanding amongst our community of the importance of maritime trade, local marine industries and activities, and the need to protect our maritime interests and resources.
  3. An understanding amongst our elected representatives of the relevance of the Royal New Zealand Navy and the importance of the maritime dimension to trade, defence, EEZ and environmental policy issues.
