About Us

The Navy League of New Zealand was established in Auckland in 1896 following its establishment in the United Kingdom the previous year. The UK body was disbanded in 1979, but Navy Leagues continue to prosper around the world with the largest and strongest being that in the USA.

The Navy League currently has branches in each of the four main centres, although at times in its history there have been branches in many other cities and towns. The Navy League of New Zealand is the national body that co-ordinates the activity of the branches.

The Auckland Branch is an incorporated society. It has its Headquarters in the old pumping station at Okahu Bay, which it leases from the Auckland City Council. We sub-lease the top floor of the building to Hammerheads Restaurant.

Our objectives recognise the maritime dependency of our island nation and our primary activity is directed at providing opportunities for youth in the Auckland area to experience maritime activities. Principally this achieved through direct monetary support to the Sea Cadet Corps Units, the Training Ships Achilles, Bellona, Gambia and Leander.

We also support the Royal New Zealand Navy, provide rest and recreation opportunities for visiting naval vessels from overseas, as well as conducting several social events each year for our members and friends.

The present office holders of the Auckland Branch are:

Patron
The Governor-General, Dame Silvia Cartwright PCNZM, DBE

President
Mr Owen Rae

Vice President
Lt Cdr G Ford

If you have an interest in maritime matters generally, or the support of youth activities through the Sea Cadets, why not join us?
